The U.S military is strengthening its defense even further with a new purchase order with BAE Systems. BAE will be providing a large quantity of laser-guided rockets. These will enable the military to use electro-optical smart weaponries with its fixed-wing aircrafts, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems. The Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II will be used to defeat enemy armored vehicles, bunkers, and field fortifications.
Though the price of the contract is not firmly set, it has the potential to reach $617.3 million per U.S. Naval Officials. The seemingly steep price may actually be a cost effective move, as the APKWS is an add-on kit that modifies a typical 2.75in 70mL rocket into a laser-guided weapon. The APKWS itself uses a laser-guided technology to strike targets in confined area, and so far, the U.S. Marines have had a 93% hit rate with the missiles. The add-on kit fits on the U.S. Marine Corps UH-1Y, AH-1W, Ah-1Z, U.S. Army Ah-64 Apache helicopter, Eurocopter Tiger, and U.S. Navy MH-60 Seahawk helicopter to name a few. This gives the defense a missile with surgical strike capabilities at a low price. The APKWS System will go to the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, U.S. Air Force, as well as governments of other countries including The Netherlands, Jordan, Australia and Iraq.
